Has the gangster film passed the prolific producer-director by?
, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and visual effects supervisor Pablo Helman handled the effects for the film. The book detailed the life story of Frank Sheeran, a hired gun for the Bufalino crime family, and his alleged ties to the murder of Teamster's frontman Jimmy Hoffa (played in the film by Al Pacino).  De Niro also served as a producer for the film.  To promote the release of the film on its streaming service, Netflix took over five blocks of Little Italy, Manhattan on November 22 and 23, 2019 and back-dated them to August 1, 1975, the day after Jimmy Hoffa was reported missing. Netflix then bought the film rights for $105 million and agreed to finance the film's $125 million budget with a projected release date of October 2019. He also praised the performances of De Niro and Pacino, stating that The Irishman is one of Scorsese's "most satisfying films in decades.  The studio spent an estimated $50 million promoting the film, as well as an additional $40 million on its Oscar campaign. " Mike Ryan of Uproxx called it a "phenomenal film", stating that the de-aging is "pretty good" and "the best I've seen so far", but noted that "if you stare at it, yes, you can see the imperfections [...] but you do get used to it", while Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post wrote that the film has "a different tone than your average gangster film" and that "Scorsese is at the top of his game [...] his film is never boring, and it explores some unexpectedly deep themes for mafiosos. The former labor union high official and hitman, learned to kill serving in Italy during the Second World War. Despite his parole terms, Hoffa undertakes a plan to reclaim his power atop the Teamsters.  The film also received limited releases in Germany, Spain, Ireland, Japan, Brazil, South Korea, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

As a flip side to the previous point, it can be argued that perhaps Scorsese has mined this particular field of films once too often.
